( 30-08-2003 - Maitreyee Handique - Business Standard ) FTV to open 18 bars in India
Take a bar, combine it with fusion cuisine in an ultra modern decor where fixtures include hi-tech LCD panels over tabletops, sprinkle it with a fashion show by designers like Rohit Bal, Malini Ramani and Tarun Tahiliani and you have the F Bar & Lounge.
Fashion TV's second bar in nine months has opened in Delhi after making its debut at Bangalore’s Le Meridien. The bar has come up at Tavern, overlooking the Qutub golf course in south Delhi.
"Its all about an attempt to bring Fashion TV on ground," observes Sanjay Mani, head, licensing and merchandising, FTV India, speaking about the channel’s second venture.
"It's a high-end bar that revolves around food. We are trying to give a certain signature look with visual images."
With sleek and minimal interior designed by Amresh Arora, the place is expected to draw crowds and revenue, claims Mani.
"We've actually spend substantial amount of money. On an average, pub business does Rs 40 lakh a month. As a high-end bar, we hope to do about 15 per cent more," says Mani.
But FTV is not content with two bars in the country, even though it has only three worldwide — one each in Budapest, Buenos Aires and Warsaw. It plans to open 18 more in India.
Says Mani: "We're looking at Mumbai, Pune, Chennai and Kolkata. About three FB&L will open next year," he adds.
While the Bangalore F Bar & Lounge focuses on Korean and Japanese food, the Delhi joint will concentrate on experimental cuisine. For instance, you could find a home-made pasta with makhni sauce at the lounge bar.
"Call it world cuisine," announces Jai Singh, the franchisee for FB&L in Delhi. "We've spent a lot of time trying to combine flavours of the world like taking the south Indian dosa and blending it with cilantro chicken./”
Singh who had earlier opened restaurants like Shreethali and Chezalia in Bangalore also plans to bring his pub brand 180 Proof to Delhi, and is casting eyes on opening more resto-bars in the city.
At the FTV bar, meal per person is expected to cost Rs 500. The bar will be open to public from September 8. Mani says that the FTV bar is focusing on food as the consumers prefer to try out new bars rather than patronise any one. But will the concept last?
"Fashion trends are changing and evolving everyday. Our bars have been designed to keep changing. And every place we hope to take the bar, the place will look different as the concept is about change," says Mani.
